Lake Waikaremoana , Sea of Rippling
Waters
The Lake Waikaremoana
Region offers some of the most scenic views in New Zealand. Considered
one of New Zealand's best-kept secrets, the lake and its surrounds,
offer many different activities - from hunting and fishing through
to tramping.
Nestled in the south-eastern
corner of the densely forested Te Urewera National Park the lake
is the most beautiful in the North Island, but because of its
remoteness, has seldom been touched by human interference. Waikaremoana
is one of the most scenic and untouched places in New Zealand,
from it's dense beech forests to the deep blue of the Lakes,
there is something here for everyone.
The lake is open year
round to fly and lure fishing, the rivers running into the lake
are fly fishing only and are closed from 1st July to the 1 December.
Ruakituri River
This river, which merges
with the Haungoa to form the Wairoa River at the scenic Te Reinga
Falls, is famous for a strain of muscular, spectacular swimmers
known as the Ruakituri Rainbows. Their genes have been used in
many experimental stockings in other New Zealand fishing waters.
The Ruakituri River is a trout-rich environment and is one of
the top fly fishing rivers in New Zealand.
Fly fishing only, open
1 Oct to 30 June.
Motu River
The Motu is the only
New Zealand river protected as a wilderness area by act of parliament.
The upper reaches run through lush farmland before entering dense
virgin native forest to complete the 100km jorney to the Pacific
Ocean. The wild Motu Brown Trout test the skill of any angler
entering their domain.
Fly fishing only, open
1 Oct to 30 June.
